Welcome to Book Club

The FemChem Book Club ist a great reason to get together more often, socialize and simply have fun. If anyone is interested, we would love you to join us.

The next meeting will be on the 25th of January 2024 at 15:00 and we will talk about “Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones” by James Clear.

Our meeting spot will be a seminar room in the BC building (depending on availability, the room will be announced on our social media channels) with the option to go outside should the weather be fine. If you need even more reasons to join, there will be cake, coffee and tea!

Future books will be decided by the participants, so you can already collect your ideas.

You can also find all the hard on our Instagram and twitter account (@femchem_tuwien; @femchemTUW), or you can contact us directly on our social media channels if you have further questions.

We hope we’ll see you there!

Our reviews of former book club books:

“In Defence of Witches: Why Women Are Still on Trial” by Mona Chollet

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

“In Defence of Witches” is an engrossing and enlightening read that highlights the struggles women have endured and continue to face. By exploring the history of witch hunts and connecting it to contemporary issues, Mona Chollet compels readers to critically examine the position of women in society. Her ability to present complex ideas in a clear and accessible manner, backed by extensive research, further enhances the book’s appeal. This work serves as a call to action for readers to confront the ongoing challenges women face and work towards a more equitable future. I highly recommend “In Defence of Witches” to anyone interested in women’s history, feminism, and social justice.

“Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

“We thoroughly enjoyed ‘Lessons in Chemistry.’ The author’s non-chemist background occasionally led to an exaggerated portrayal of the main character as a stereotypical chemist, which felt a bit unusual. However, within the pages, the book delved into important issues and challenges that women in the scientific community face today and have sadly encountered in the past. Despite the occasional over-the-top moments, the novel was an engaging and thought-provoking read.”

“Feminism, Interrupted: Disrupting Power” by Lola Olufemi

Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)

“Feminism Interrupted” by Lola Olufemi is a short yet thought-provoking book that explores
important topics such as racism, transphobia, Islamophobia, sex work, consent, and
reproductive justice. It emphasizes the need to consider and protect the most vulnerable in
society. The book’s focus on British women’s experiences, particularly Black women, adds a
unique perspective. Olufemi challenges readers to look beyond individual viewpoints,
emphasizing the need to protect and support marginalized communities. This concise but
powerful book offers a valuable discussion on contemporary feminism.
