Reclaiming Expertise – What is Your Turf?

A workshop by Frauendomäne in corp. with FemChem

“We didn’t find a qualified woman for the panel discussion” – We are all familiar with phrases like this and have found them being used in all sorts of  contexts regardless of the field of expertise in question.

But is it really true that there are no female experts?

“Definitely not!” is Frauendomäne’s answer.

Frauendomäne is a group of women who has founded a free-of-charge database filled with female* experts in a great variety of fields for exactly this purpose. In the course of their work they found out that the issue is not only the lack of visibility of female expertise but also the general circumstances that allow for a personal identification as an expert. Therefore, it is Frauendomäne’s goal to adapt the setting in which women*’s realities are conceived instead of fitting women* into the existing system.

Hence the main questions Frauendomäne is dealing with are:

Under which circumstances is someone considered an expert?

Who determines if somebody is an expert?

What are the factors influencing the process of expert labeling?

What do the terms “expertise” and “achievements” actually mean?

The general setting in which we grow up and are educated still does not acknowledge female contributions that have led to many advances, for example in natural sciences. Instead, the image of a typical scientist in our minds is somewhat familiar to Einstein’s portrait. This perception stands in immense contrast to the actual numbers: gender ratios of undergrad students at the faculty of chemistry at TU Vienna are close to 50:50.

Our workshop – organized by Frauendomäne – aims at resolving such contradictions by discussing related questions with female experts, like you. Together we will try to find new definitions for the terms “expertise” and “achievements”, so that these terms are reconsidered and expanded accordingly!

Be a part of redefining expertise and register now via the FemChem homepage for the workshop held on June 1st, 2021, 6-8 pm!

If possible, the workshop will be held in persona (maybe in an outdoor setting) but a digital alternative will be provided.
